Tell us about the new Album, “Last of a Dyin’ Breed”
Well, it came out a couple weeks ago and we are pretty happy about how it is going so far. We are just out here trying to promote this thing thru the end of the year. Everything is going good with it and we are playing a bunch of new songs off the Album in the show and I think it’s going over really well. We’ve tried out several of the new songs in different shows and noticed a couple of them have gone over real well in the live show and we have had real success with that.
We went in the studio back in February, March and April and we consciously decided that we were going to go into the studio and record this thing Old School, the way that a lot of bands including us used to record Albums. Meaning that after the songs were all written, we set up in Blackbird Studio in Nashville and decided along with our Producer to mic everything up and once we had the arrangement down we just started laying it down. I mean, as soon as the arrangement was ready and we were ready, we just turned on the machine and let it roll! So, pretty much what you’re hearing on this album as far as the tracks are concerned are all done live. We enjoyed that so much more than piecing it together with the drum tracks and then going in with one guitar at a time; it was much more fun.
What is your favorite track on the Album?
That is a tough one for me to say. I really like the song ‘One Day At A Time’ because I think that reverts back to old Lynyrd Skynyrd stuff. We open our live show with the title track ‘Last Of A Dyin’ Breed’ and we also include the song ‘Good Teacher’. I really like ‘Good Teacher’ because it has a kind of ‘Hendrix’ style ‘Cross Town Traffic’ vibe to it which I love playing the Wah Wah pedals in. We also play ‘Home Grown’ which I think we are getting ready to insert into the shows because, from what I understand, it may be the next single released to rock radio. I love the song ‘Mississippi Blood’. A friend of ours, Jaren Johnston, who is in the band The Cadillac Black (that is on the road with us right now) wrote that song with us and Johnny (VanZant) and I sing that together. The song ‘Start Living Life Again’ is also good. There are just a lot of them.
Your favorite past time is Bass Fishing. Have you had any down time to fish?
You know, my brother and I do a lot of fishing and he called me the other day and said ‘You are stretched tighter than a hat band’ and I told him ‘yeah, tell me about it!’ because we are out here trying to promote this record that just came out and I haven’t had any time to do anything that I would like to do. I have this Skynyrd thing going on and I have a couple side projects going on as well and between that, it has me just wound tight. As soon as this tour is over with, I’m going to take a week and take my brother on a fishing trip. Not too many years ago, I pulled a 12.5LB Largemouth Bass out of Mississippi. If you get down in the south, it’s not impossible to hook up on one of them bad babies, you know!
Speaking of Fishing, What is your most exciting methods to Bass Fish?
I’ll tell you what I really think is exciting and that is fishing with live shiners. If you want to go for big bass, and if you want to pull out a really big fish that could possibly go on the wall, my ‘go to’ lure, if you want to call it a lure, would be fishing with live shiners. Now, if you don’t want to mess with that, I’ve caught my biggest fish on a worm. The worm that I go to is just a 5 inch, round head worm rigged Texas style. That 12.5 that I pulled was caught that way. I mean, when it hit, the fight was on. During the spring, pre spawn time, I love top water fishing with a Devil Horse or something like that and my brother and I have used Horny Toads many times around Florida. That is a great way to fish Florida, no doubt about it. Especially during the pre spawn times when the females are gorging themselves and getting ready to go on the beds. Then during the post spawn times, the females are gorging themselves because they are hungry and the topwater Horny Toads are one of my ‘go to’ lures. That is exciting, I’ve got to say.
What is next for you? Tell me about your side projects.
First off, I have a whole new generation of Blackfoot that I am producing. I have put together 4 young guys as a new generation of Blackfoot and they are out playing. They have worked up most of the old catalog of Blackfoot songs and they are writing new material. I am not in the band, but I am producing and handling the band. It looks like we have a record deal with a label that we are really close to getting. I am also getting a brand new network on cable and I am putting together a documentary / reality series called ‘Homeland Nation’. You can look it up on the internet at Homeland Nation.com. I am the host of the show that deals with all the Native American Tribes in the country. We are real close to getting this signed with the network. Once that is signed, we are going to do ten to twelve episodes for the first season and we will kick off the brand new network on cable with that show
